Gum disease in cats just like in humans is caused by the accumulation of tartar in the teeth’s surface. The build up of tartar causes the gums around the teeth to become irritated. When the condition worsens, gums start to pull back from the teeth exposing the roots, causing infections and eventually tooth loss.

How can you tell gum disease in cats?

If your cat has difficulty in eating or simply closing its mouth, it is most likely suffering from some form of gum disease. Examine your cat’s mouth closely and check if the gums are receding, swollen or reddened. Other signs of gum disease in cats are bad breath, drooling, and blood-tinged saliva.

It is easy to spot some of the symptoms but in some cases, it takes a visit to the veterinarian to reveal the problem. It is important for the cat to have regular physical and dental check-up to detect gum disease early.

How is gum disease in cats treated?

To treat gum disease, your cat’s teeth must undergo a thorough cleaning procedure that involves scaling or removing of tartar around the gum line; flushing the removed tartar to eliminate bacteria; smoothing the teeth’s surface to prevent the formation of plaque; and coating the teeth with fluoride.

This procedure requires the use of anesthesia. The anesthetics that veterinarians use today pose minimal risk to cats. Your veterinarian will also be able to determine any significant risk of anesthesia to your cat’s health.

Delayed treatment of gum disease in cats will only worsen the infection in the gums and can result in sore throat, gingivitis and tooth extraction. Gum infections can also affect the health of other body parts such as the heart, intestinal tract and kidneys. Do not wait for symptoms to get worse before getting treatment or your cat may suffer more health problems.

How can you help your cat achieve good oral hygiene?

Take your cat to the vet for regular check-ups. You can also perform at-home dental care using special toothbrush, toothpaste and rinses designed for cats. Your vet will be able to help you choose the right products and equipment to use. There are also certain dry foods and cat chews that can help control tartar formation and gum disease in cats.

Much like in humans, your cat’s dental condition contributes to its overall general health. Keep your cat healthy by keeping its dental care a routine.
