Hair loss after pregnancy is rather typical bt can be extremely disturbing, particularly to a first-time mother.

This ranks high on the “what they don’t tell you about pregnancy and childbirth” list that all moms discover after the fact!

The condition is clinically called telogen effluvium and takes place because of hormone variation following childbirth. During pregnancy, some hair is pushed from its resting phase into a growing phase, and after giving birth, this hair then falls out, sometimes causing extreme hair loss after pregnancy.

Even though it is typical, hair loss after pregnancy is aggravating. Having incredibly thick hair did not help my battle with hair loss after pregnancy, and I pulled my hair out in handfuls every day for about two months.

Unlike typical hair loss, none of the supposed practical products will work on your hair. Luckily, hair loss after pregnancy is usually not long-term and will grow back.

This is typically not the case and your hair will return to its normal state within a couple of months, if not quicker. In the meantime, you can continue to color and cut your hair as you usually would. These processes will not impact the loss of hair in any way.

If your hair loss after pregnancy is extreme, you may want to check with your doctor. Hypothyroidism can be commonly detected postpartum, and hair loss is a sign that runs widespread among females. In addition to hair loss, other symptoms might include fatigue, failure to lose weight, hoarseness, anxiety and weight gain.

Once again, these signs are relatively common amongst females within months of having a child, so the pregnancy probably causes hair loss after pregnancy.

If you are concerned, you can contact your doctor to find out about your worries and possibly have some tests run to ease your mind.
