As a member of the family of a love one with Alzheimer’s illness, it was tough for us to comprehend the entire disease however as time went on and we found out more about the condition, it wasn’t hard to understand.
It started back when I was still in school, we could not understand why grandma would constantly forget where she was going. She would get lost and we would always worry about granny’s location. So my grandfather carefully gave the vehicle away, ever since she wasn’t able to drive any longer.
Granny didn’t want to lose her motorist license. For that was her independent. It was sad however we needed to do it to keep her safe and we as family felt better understanding that grandma would not be out in the streets lost.
Then as time passed, we observed more things about granny that wasn’t right. I would go to her home as I always did and saw that she was putting newspaper in the oven and switching on the range. One day I went to granny’s house and it was cigarette smoking.
I thought for minutes that she had burnt something while she was cooking however I got to looking and I found the paper in the range.
I asked grandmother what she was tying to do and she could not keep in mind. I was terrified at that point so I relocated next door to my grandparents. Living next doors, I could be there to enjoy her without her knowing what I was doing. The relocation was a huge aid.
I would go over there to check out. It got harder everyday for us to see the health problem was taking my granny.
Grandma didn’t like baths. We would have to offer her a bath and she would just dislike that. That was a hard day for us. No one wished to provide grandmother a bath due to the fact that she would act out so bad. But as we found out about all this, we discovered that people with Alzheimer’s does not like any kind of water.
So we would then just wash her up which was much better for us. We then had peace when it was bath day.
We would let granny go looking for the home and she would go to the bathroom when we would leave. She would constantly end up going in her pants.
So we would need to go back house and alter her. She could not figure out what was wrong with her. It was difficult for her too due to the fact that at that point she knew something was wrong however didn’t know what.
It got to the point that grandmother would just lie around and sleep. It was too tough for us as relative to look after grandma anymore so we as household required to have a talk and we thought it was best to put grandmothers in an assisted living home where she could get all the assistance and care she required around the clock.
Grandmother was in the nursing house for about 12 years. We as household would see grandma slowly going into her own little world.
We would go get her and bring her house for the vacations, or just go get her and take her out for ice cream. We were always there for grandmother. But it was hard as enjoyed ones to deal with this illness. It finally took grandmas life about 2 years back.
We as household miss grandma but she in a better place now, we still remember her, and all the excellent and hard times we had. It is hard to take care of an enjoyed one with this health problem.
It is difficult to handle it because we saw granny go from a strong healthy grandma to an ill grandmother.
