I just recently posted a short article to my site about how certain beliefs underpin tension, anxiety and anxiety. Among the primary beliefs I briefly presented issues vulnerability. Helplessness is a huge part of these diseases so let’s look at how you can decrease the impact this flawed belief has.
Thinking you are powerless in life is a truly horrible sensation and I write from personal experience here. For 5 years, a number of terrible occasions led me to the point where I believed life held nothing but pain and distress.
I genuinely thought life would unfold in such a way that would damage me and there wasn’t a single thing I might do about it.
Maybe you’ve felt this way too?
The underlying belief is the essential factor here. It is a company belief that life is something that takes place to you and you have NO CONTROL over anything. In short, you are a powerless, passive recipient for whatever life decides to toss at you.
It is a horrible state to be in. Additionally, this belief just isn’t true.
Now, this can be one extremely distressing experience, I have actually been through it, so have numerous others. You respond in a highly unfavorable and emotionally arousing way:
” I’m ravaged. He/she was my whole world and now my world has actually fallen apart.
Everything I perform in life constantly goes wrong and this is another catastrophe. I’ll never ever more than happy once again.”
Wow. It’s a powerful reaction isn’t it? I make sure you, like me, have either responded this way to an event or you have actually heard somebody respond in this manner. It is a very harmful method to designate a significance to an occasion you are challenged with.
The last 2 sentences reveal the belief in vulnerability. The keywords are: Whatever constantly fails and never ever enjoy once again. When you respond in such a way, you are telling yourself that you are powerless because nothing has actually ever gone right for you and you’ll never ever enjoy no matter what. You’re saying you can not manage anything and for that reason, you genuinely think you’re powerless.
How do you think you’ll feel when you respond like this? Precisely.
You’ll feel deeply dissatisfied, confused, disappointed and of course, powerless to change your life. Why would you feel anything else? Everything ALWAYS goes wrong and you’ll NEVER EVER enjoy once again so what’s the point of doing anything to produce change?
Do you see how helplessness works? But it just isn’t true. Obviously, there are lots of things in life that are entirely beyond your control. Other people and Nature to name however two. There are things in life you have some control over– where you live and work.
It is essential to keep these truths about control firmly in mind.
Here’s the most essential truth about helplessness: There is something you have complete control over in your life and that is how you respond and assign meanings to everything you are challenged with. In the example above, a much better response would be:
” OK, my relationship hasn’t worked but other things in my life are working out and I’ll concentrate on them for a while as I come to terms with what’s taken place. Just because this relationship hasn’t exercised, it does not imply future relationships will stop working and when I have actually got over this, I’ll go out there and find someone much better.”
See the difference? You’re keeping control by assigning a less psychological meaning, a suggesting more in keeping with reality.
You’re acknowledging that you’re hurting, but that this is temporary and when you’re ready, you’ll attempt once again. You know you have other things in your life that you can concentrate on and this reaction will avoid a sensation of helplessness developing.
See you soon.
It is a firm belief that life is something that happens to you and you have NO CONTROL over anything. In brief, you are a powerless, passive recipient for whatever life decides to throw at you.
You’ll feel deeply dissatisfied, baffled, frustrated and of course, powerless to change your life. Of course, there are numerous things in life that are completely beyond your control. There are things in life you have some control over– where you live and work.
