In Illinois, when we speak of psychiatric facilities, one health center quickly enters your mind. That is Elgin Mental Health Center or EMHC.
As the 2nd earliest state healthcare facility in Illinois, this facility opened in 1872 under its previous name, Northern Illinois Hospital and Asylum for the Insane. The first-ever physiological measurements of mental patients were recorded by the Elgin Papers back in the 1890s.
By 1997, the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Health care Organizations gave EMHC its commendation for 2 years in a row.
How the health center was developed can be broken down into five stages. The very first phase ended in 1893. A stable leadership was accountable for the progressive growth during this period.
After this stage, the healthcare facility exceptionally grew to more than twice its size. This 2nd phase, which ended by 1920, was characterized by a lot of politicking, management modifications and power struggles in the system.
For the 3rd duration, development was more fast. Healthcare facility population, which reached its peak by the 1950s, increased for both geriatric and veterans. This is since the duration was post World War I and The Second World War.
By the time the 3rd phase ended, healthcare facility population decreased. Throughout this stage, psychotropic medications were introduced.
Other turning points for this period include the advancement of neighborhood health facilities, deinstitutionalization, up until the decentralization of decision-making and authority. This fourth stage ended until the 1980s.
The last phase is what some call the “renewal.” It started in 1983, when health center census was at its lowest. Because of this, the medical facility was on the edge of closure.
The state chose to close Manteno Mental Health Center instead.
During this time, the healthcare facility was almost rebuilt. While the old structures used a congregate model called the Kirkbride plan, brand-new physical facilities were added such as homes in order to abide by a segregate plan.
There are two departments, civil and forensic. Each department has an intense treatment center, workplace and meeting room which faculty and students can use.
Forensic programs were even more established, and new affiliations with medical schools were likewise made. Associations include that with The Chicago Medical School, among others.
An increase in educational activities showed that EMHC is also interested in the education of future physicians and medical graduates.
Health center system operations were also modified. Activities of community mental health centers are integrated in the system operations. Community psychological health centers refer their patients to EMHC.
These neighborhood mental centers consist of DuPage County Health Department, Lake County Mental Health Center, Ecker Center for Mental Health, and Kenneth Young Center.
At present, admissions are close to 1300 every year. Patients are normally African-American, Euro-American and Hispanic. The health center holds 582 to 600 beds and about 40 full-time physicians.
Much like any health facility, EMHC is bothered with problems and controversies with respect to their policies and programs.
Elgin Mental Health Center continues to do what it is expected to do, and that is to provide the best treatment for their patients.
